ALL. OF. THESE. THINGS.
YOU. ARE. ALL. AMAZING.
NEVER. LIMIT. YOURSELF.
This is all of the true. I need, like, a daily reminder of how true this is.
Everytime I see these, it’s like I reflexively reblog. -Mel

TISH, ALTHOUGH COMICAL, NOT ACTUALLY A CARTOON: a neat perspective trick that you should know
say you drew a box and you want this box to become, I don’t know, a building:
and you want to divide the sides of the box in half, so you can know where to put the windows and doors and whatever! if you eyeball it, you’re probably going to miss the halfway point, and it will…
I never thought of that! :o Super helpful, man.

okay so first off i just want to say that i am still learning this stuff myself
i only started to really try to branch away from sameface/samebody syndrome within the last few months and i still have a lot to learn!
but so yeah i thought i’d start by first posting some of my inspiration?? like if i am stuck for body shapes, etc, i actually keep a folder on my computer where i save images that have bodytypes i think are interesting (photos, illustration, animation stills, character design sketches, etc.)
i think the easiest way to really study body shapes is to go to cartoons! real life helps a lot, too, of course - it gives you the foundation and basic understanding of structure - but it doesn’t give you the exaggeration.
pixar and other such animation studios are, of course, the immediate go to
A little essay (?) on body types by one of my favorite artists. :D (GO CHECK OUT HER ORIGINAL COMICS THEY ARE LOVELY)

Some things I’ve taught myself through out the years. I have not gone to college for art or comics, these are things I’ve learned by just trying to make comics by myself.
I’ve also learned this stuff on the fly, through reading and doing. Regarding that last one: you can also use other elements to guide the reader’s eye through the page - shapes of objects, perspective on elements that “zoom” from top to bottom or right to left, etc.
When you start making comics, you kind of learn these things instinctively;like some kind of tiny intrinsic comic artist is guiding your own hand.
It’s always really helpful to have someone show you though!

(PS: PARTY ON FRIDAY WOOO. Bring cups and bowls plz. We ran out last time.)
(Also foodstuffs as you see fit.)
This Friday we’ll be having our annual picnic in the park, so if you have food/portable instruments/blankets you’d like to bring, please do! There will be a piñata, watermelon smashing, lots of food and general merriment.
If the weather ends up sucking we’ll push it to another time, but for now this is the date.
So…yeah. Friday put on your party pants and put together some pasta salad cause we be picnic’n.
